QUALITY DESIGN WITH A GOOD CAUSE

WHY ARE WE DIFFERENT?

  • We empower artisans with special needs, mentoring them as apprentices and providing skill development, placement, and retail support.

  • While our artisans play a vital role, not all our products are crafted entirely by them; we also offer complementary items.

  • We're driven by a mission: quality products for a good cause, not charity.

  • We aim to earn your business and endorsement through our products and purpose.

  • Your support, be it through purchases, volunteering, or material donation, promotes a dignified livelihood for our artisans.

The Mustard Tree Vision

"Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds (our special needs friends) can come and perch in its branches”.

Our Story

“His disciples asked him, “Teacher, whose sin caused him to be born blind? Was it his own or his parents' sin?”3Jesus answered, “His blindness has nothing to do with his sins or his parents' sins. He is blind so that God's power might be seen at work in him. As long as it is day, we must keep on doing the work of him who sent me; night is coming when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light for the world.”

 John 9: 2-5

We have seen this very promise of God’s power showered upon us throughout the journey with our son, Ryan Koh, 19 with Autism. God has opened and closed many doors and brought many different people into our paths. We have had our share of worries over Ryan’s future, as he aged out of the SPED school system since 2015.

While he was blessed to be working with a social enterprise doing leather craft work for a while, the work environment was not suitable for him. The limited options offered by SG Enable were also not feasible. Since end July 2015, he has been honing his acquired craft skills from home. Ryan is not very verbal. However, he spoke through his beautiful handmade craft work.

What started as a mummy’s pride to showcase her son’s work on Facebook, has now been transformed to a little enterprise of Ryan. People have been reaching out to make enquiries about his work and asking to purchase them. In fact, some of his initial craft work which was so rough and not well made has been snapped up. The buyer shared “"Everyone leaves different fingerprints on a piece of work. If this is his style, you can't ask him to change." We were so touched and inspired by these encouraging words and were persuaded to part with this very first batch of felt frogs.

Spurred on by this experience, we continued exposing him to different forms of materials. A dear friend of ours has also volunteered to come over to our house once a week to teach Ryan how to sew. Although we are weary of his sensory issues to certain noise, we ventured to buy him a sewing machine. We were all amazed by the results.

Today, our aim is to impact lives of people with special needs just like Ryan – who did not have the opportunity to uncover their God given talents or offered a chance to showcase their talents. With like-minded partners, we develop customized training courses for people with special needs, so that they can be empowered with industry standard skills, which will either enable them to seek gainful employment or setup shop as a home-based entrepreneur like Ryan.
